Want To Be More Resilient? Here Are A Few Tips To Start…
Resiliency. The ability to withstand change and embrace differences with an open mind. It’s a personal characteristic some are inherently born with, but one that can easily be built on.
Life is dynamic, and unpredictable. You can bet on things to change without knowing when or how. Some changes are exciting, and great; Others are scary and difficult.
The first step to becoming more resilient, is to work on the way you view the less-than-wanted circumstances that enter your life. Resilient people approach problems, losses, or changes with a balanced emotional response. They have the mindset of “This makes me feel badly, but at least it isn’t ____”. In doing this, they can embrace the difficult, but make room for the positive.
Find Purpose In The Problem
If something unfortunate happens to you, or someone close to you, it’s easy to ask: “Why me?”. It’s even easier to play the victim and relive the circumstance over and over on a loop. The one way to get out of this, is to find purpose in the problem. Maybe you lost the chance for a promotion at work, and you’re feeling down. Ask yourself, what can this do to motivate me? From there, set up tangible actions to set you on a path to better things.
Don’t Go Into A Personal Bubble
We’ve all been there–something horrible happens and we shut ourselves inside, we turn our cellphones off, and we go into a cave of emotions. This is a more detrimental approach to handling the bad things in life. The outcome is feeling more isolated, more alone in dealing with the problem at hand, and less understood. To get better at being more resilient, those who go through changes less phased, know the benefit of a good social group. Even if being alone is what you think you need, what really helps is having open ears and non-judgmental friends to provide support.
