Our love of coffee is second to none.
We’ve talked about the amazing benefits of coffee, we’ve learned how to make cold brewed coffee, and we’ve added it to smoothies and shakes. Coffee is truly one of our favorite things. But which brew is best for you?
Knowing your roast is important for any coffee connoisseur.
With light roast coffee beans, they’re roasted only until the first time the beans pop or crack, which may occur within the first several minutes. These beans are light brown with a dry surface. They have a toasted grain taste to them and have higher acidity.
Medium roasts, like our Breakfast Blend, are sweeter than most light roasts. The beans are milk chocolate brown. They do not have the same grain taste as light roasts and have more body to balance the acidity and aroma of the beans.
Full roasts are roasted several minutes longer, until the beans begin to pop and crack again. At this point the beans appear shinier due to traces of oil beginning to rise to the surface, making them appear a darker shade of brown and satiny in appearance. The result is a flavor that may be spicy with heavier body and less acidity. Hints of smokiness with subtle caramel to chocolate flavors are much more evident in a full roast.
Dark roast beans, like the ones found in our Sumatra coffee, are roasted until they begin to smoke, causing the beans to become more pungent and take on a darker brown, sometimes nearly black, color. The beans will appear oily, causing them to look shiny. There is very little acidity in dark roast beans, with the roast flavor completely dominating the natural flavors of the bean’s origin.
The great thing about understanding your coffee roast is that there are endless possibilities when it comes to blending your coffee based on roast and origin. Whether you prefer to keep it simple with a single estate coffee or experiment with a blend to tantalize your taste buds, we think that when it comes to coffee, there is no wrong answer.
