3 HELPFUL WAYS TO STOP NEGATIVE THOUGHTS IN
For times when you are up at night thinking about what-if situations, or ways you think you’ve let yourself down, try these tips.
Negative thinking. It is a thought cycle that doesn’t quit. First, you’re thinking of a single situation that happened, and what you could have done differently, then you’re led down a rabbit hole of why you’re a total failure. While many of us think we’re alone in this self-defeat talk, that’s not the case. In fact, humans have 50,000 thoughts a day, and 70-80% of those are negative…that means each day, we are processing about 40,000 negative concepts in our head. It must end. Today we’re going to provide 3 tricks to stop negative thoughts in their tracks.
Way 1: Define. Decide. Defeat.
The first way to rearrange your thoughts and to stop those pesky negative ones is through this fun alliteration: Define. Decide. Defeat. Let’s break it down for you, so you can see how it’ll work:
Define the problem. Is your negative thinking influenced by a friend, a job, or another activity?
Decide how to move forward. If it’s a certain recurring influence on you, you can now decide what steps to take. Will you confront said friend, or slowly phase them out? Will you look for another job, or try to make the most of your skills where you are?
Defeat the thought. Having tangible steps, you are now ready to defeat the cause of your negative thinking. Since you have defined it, decided on an action, you can now implement the action and starve off the draining source.
Way 2: Become Present
If there is no identifying source of negativity, and it’s just that you find yourself in a funk of not being good enough (or what have you), then it’s time to become mindful. The simplest way to do this is to get out of your head, and consider the present moment. Look to nature for an easy escape. Here’s how:
- Look at your surroundings and pick one thing that stands out, be it a flower or a bird
- If you picked a flower, look at it closely. Observe the various color shades that it has, feel the weather around you while you’re focused on its beauty, smell the different scents of nature. Become immersed.
Way 3: Go For A Quick Workout
When all else fails, turn to the gym, or whichever activity will help refocus your mind on another task. Not only will this boost your energy levels, and esteem, it will force you out of the negative head space. After all, how can you concentrate on negative thinking when you’re paying attention to lifting weights or nailing that crow pose?
