Top The Trend: All About Matcha Green Tea
It seems that alternatives to coffee have been on the rise as of late. From turmeric lattes (did you see the one Starbucks released in the U.K.?) to herbal infused drinks for natural energy, the list just continues to get longer and more creative. However, the first kid on the block, and the one with staying power is Matcha Green Tea. We’re sure you’ve heard about it, but today we’re here to school you on it.
First, we want to touch base on the background of Matcha and give you some 411 on its origin as well as history. Wondering what Matcha is? Well, unlike loose green tea leaves packets, Matcha green tea is a powdered form. It is made from the leaves of green tea, so you’re essentially drinking the tea leaves, rather than seeping them in water as you would otherwise. This is usually done by mixing the powder in with water or milk, then whisking together to form the drink!
Matcha originated in China, during the Tang Dynasty, where the leaves were dried then made into bricks. Breaking off a piece of the brick and mixing with water, gave the original Matcha drink. Traditionally Matcha was prominently used by Buddhist Monks who drank it in the afternoon before meditating. The concept of their use was carried over to Japan, where it was popular with samurai and shoguns.
In modern day, Matcha-based recipes are endless. From food to beauty, the powdered leaves are a wellness staple. Today, we bring you three ways to start (or continue!) to incorporate this traditional tea into your life. Before you read on, grab yourself our Pure Matcha Tea!
